Carbohydrates are one of the three macronutrients, which means they provide our bodies with energy. Carbohydrates, or carbs for short, are actually our bodies’ preferred source of energy. There are two major types of carbs.
- Simple Carbs are single sugar molecules which makes them quicker to digest. You can find simple carbs in milk, fruit and refined sugar. These are best to eat 10-30 minutes before your game for a boost in energy!
- Complex Carbs are also called starches and fiber. You can find complex carbs in any source of grain like pasta, bread or crackers. These are best to eat 1-3 hours before your game for a boost in energy!
Which type of carb is better?
Both types of carbs serve a purpose in our diet. Simple carbs can provide quick bursts of energy. Complex carbs provide the fiber our body needs and can help keep us full for longer. When choosing a carbohydrate, it is always best to look for the food closest to its natural form or the whole grain option. For example, an apple would be a more nutrient dense choice than apple juice and 100% whole wheat bread would be a more nutritious option than white bread.
