Allergies happen when our immune system overreacts to a substance in our bodies because it sees it as harmful.

TYPES OF ALLERGIES:

  • Food- the 8 most common food allergens are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat and soy.
  • Pollen- pollen allergies are also called seasonal allergies, they often cause runny noses and itchy eyes.
  • Pet- animal fur of any kind can cause allergies, there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic pet.
  • Insect- bug bites or stings can cause allergic reactions.
  • Drug- a drug allergy means you are allergic to a certain type of medicine.
  • Mold- mold, mildew, and fungi can grow indoors or outdoors and they all can cause a reaction.
  • Latex- a material similar to plastic, many band-aids or gloves are made of latex.

The level of reaction depends on the person and type of allergy. Symptoms include runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, rash, or trouble breathing. Some reactions cause a life threating reaction called anaphylaxis. It is important to determine the type and severity of allergies with a doctor and to come up with a proper treatment plan.

If you or someone you know has an allergy, you use the tips below to be safe!

  1. Be prepared- Always inform the adult in charge of your allergy and have them carry any medication or other things you would need in case of an allergy attack.
  2. Ask first- When trying new foods always ask if the food contains your allergen before digging in. If you are not sure if a new food contains your allergen or if you are having an allergic reaction, find an adult you can talk to about your allergy ASAP.
  3. Stay cautious- If you are ever in doubt about allergen exposure, avoid the food or situation. If you have a possible exposure but are unsure inform an adult right away.
